About Free Coat Exchange
A 100% community-driven movement keeping neighbors warm — one coat at a time.
Our Story
How It All Started
Free Coat Exchange was founded on a simple but powerful idea: someone has a coat they do not need, and someone needs a coat they do not have. Why not connect them?
What began as a small community effort has grown into an annual Black Friday tradition, now in its 16th year, with over 37 drop-off and giveaway sites across Louisville and Southern Indiana.
We have never solicited or accepted funds. Every coat donated goes directly to a neighbor in need — no overhead, no bureaucracy, just warmth.

Our Mission
Give, Not Sell
Our mission is purely community-based. We operate on the belief that generosity should be simple, accessible, and free of red tape.
Any leftover coats after our annual event are donated to nonprofits that share our "give, not sell" philosophy — ensuring every coat finds someone who needs it.
What We Stand For
Community First
We are 100% community driven. No funds solicited, no funds accepted. Just neighbors helping neighbors.
Action Over Meetings
Hassle-free participation. No meetings, no committees — just show up, drop off, and make a difference.
Minimal Footprint
We send only 5 emails a year. Stay informed without being overwhelmed.
Give, Not Sell
Every coat is given freely. Leftover coats go to nonprofits that uphold the same philosophy.
Always Growing
We are always open to adding new drop-off and giveaway sites across the region.
All Welcome
No paperwork, no ID, no income verification. Everyone is welcome — donors and recipients alike.
